“One of the penalties of refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.” — Plato
Welcome home!
It’s been a while since I posted on my page, and a lot has happened … not much of it has had to do with writing. Instead, I’ve been doing my bit to help good people get elected to office. Along with my good firend Peter Iginski, we started a consulting business — Team Blue Strategy — which includes a podcast, and helps candidates win.
And we’ve got a couple of good ones!
First, my dear friend John Perticone, former President of the Building Trades Council in Rochester, for whom I worked for several years, won election as Irondequoit Supervisor. We beat two challengers in a landslide election, one that was (and is) the nastiest campaign I have ever worked on. The numbers were incredible. John won 2 to 1 with 67% of the vote against the Republican who got just 30%. The remaining 3% scattering included a couple of hundred write-in votes for the former Supervisor.
Leslie and me on election night
Earlier in the year, I helped out on a primary campaign for a political new-comer in Rochester, Lashunda Leslie-Smith, who is a power-house campaigner! In a field of nine city council candidates competing for best 4 top voter goetters, she beat out five of them to join the Rochester CIty Council. She’s amazing, and I’m really, really proud to have helped her.
scott comegys for the 54th!
All through this year, we’ve been working on a particularly exciting … and important … campaign in New York State’s 54th District. Scott Comegys, progressive political force and Alpaca Farmer, is fighting to unseat one of the Senate’s most inneffective legislators, Pam Helming. Scott ran against her two years ago, and had over 58,000 votes … in a Presidential election, enough to beat her in the midterms! So we’ve been working on a unique strategy that promises to lead to Scott joining the legislature in 2027!
Supervisor Andy Joyce
And finally, last but not least, I have my own special project to eliminate the corruption that has characterized government in my own town. Part of the problem with small town governments is that when no-one challenges the people who have been in office for decades, things get a little fuzzy. Those elected forget rules. Town employees use their positions to coerce voters. And, “deals” go to favored people out the window, leading for calls for auditing that never happen. But, here in Northern Cayuga County, we’ve changed things. Over the past few years, we’ve worked to elect new people. All new-comers to elected office that won, and are changing things dramatically. We’ve elected the first Democrat Mayor, Brian DiBernardo, in our Village. And, our town is now being led by Andy Joyce in the Supervisor’s seat, who fights every day for honest … and productive … government. It’s changed our community for the better!
History often repeats itself. From time to time I come across videos that have a particular bearing on today’s world. As you think about President’s Day this year, think about this one. — klw
Writing is a passion of mine …
… And in one way or another, I’ve spent my life earning my daily bread by the written word. I’ve owned and edited newspapers, ghostwritten speeches, created advertising copy, composed press releases, and churned out blogs and columns, sometimes for my hometown daily newspaper and then for a couple of years for Politically Speaking an online publication where I was often the Top Political Writer.
