Taking a Moment to Reflect on America's North Coast

Welcome to the North Coast of America.
I’ve noticed that a lot of people aren't aware we even have a North Coast but it’s along that big puddle that separates us from our Canadian neighbors. I've lived within ten miles of it for all of my life. And now, I live on it in a little village called Fair Haven just east of Rochester and a little Northwest of Syracuse.
It’s called that because that’s what it is for sailors – a fair haven. And, it is for me, too. Its bay rarely ever roils up like the Lake Ontario and it’s one of the most beautiful and best-kept secrets in New York State. I live here in a 900 sq. ft. cottage from the last century -- "The Alamo" -- with my two best friends: Retriever "twins", Lila, an 9 year old Black Labrador Retriever and Ace, a 3 year old Golden Retriever.
I used to do a lot of writing – as a community blogger for the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle and as an author, but I don’t have much chance to do that these days. I spend most of my time fighting the good fight as the Upstate Region Political Director for the New York Working Families Party. My region covers 28,800 square miles from Albany to Auburn and the North Country to the Southern Tier. It’s an area bigger than 10 states and means I do a whole lot of traveling.
But sometimes still, I have the urge to share a few reflections on life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
This is where you’ll find them. -- klw
